UPDATE Dec 1, 12:15 p.m. – Kamloops RCMP say one man is in custody after a high-speed police chase which began with reports that a woman was allegedly being held captive inside a pickup truck.
Mounties say the man – who is being held for a bail hearing – is expected to face a number of charges including forcible confinement, breach of release order, flight from police, dangerous and prohibitive driving, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Police say Thursday’s incident began around 5 p.m. when the Tk’emlúps Rural Detachment got multiple abandoned 911 calls from a cellphone, where a woman could be heard whispering for help.
Mounties say investigators were able to determine that the woman was being forcibly confined in a vehicle, described by witnesses on social media as a white pickup truck.
Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Jeff Pelley says a number of officers, including the Southeast District Emergency Response Team, were tasked with finding and stopping the vehicle as it fled east towards Chase before turning back towards Kamloops.
The vehicle was eventually pulled over near the intersection of Highway 1 and Grand Boulevard in Valleyview, where police say two of their vehicles, a civilian vehicle, and traffic lights were damaged.
“This situation was presented as extremely high-risk for the woman inside the vehicle,” Pelley said. “When the truck was located and failed to stop for officers, a police pursuit was authorized due to the concern for the woman’s life and safety.”
“The response ended successfully with the victim being rescued, the suspect taken into custody, and no injuries received to any of the parties or police officers involved.”
It is not clear who the suspect or the victim are, how they’re known to each other, or where the police chase began. Unconfirmed reports on social media say it began in the Cherry Creek area, west of Kamloops.
Pelley says a number of Kamloops RCMP units are investigating what he said were “multi-jurisdictional offences” in Kamloops and the surrounding rural areas.
“This was a great coordinated effort and an exceptional resolution to a high-risk incident that spanned across our city and rural coverage areas, and was supported by local and district RCMP resources,” Pelley added.
People who witnessed the police chase or have information or video of it as being told to contact the Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP Detachment at 250-314-1800 and reference file 2023-42397.
