The Kamloops branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association has applied to the province for funding to build a pair of buildings to add to rental stock in the city.
CMHA Kamloops Executive Director Alfred Achoba says they’re eyeing two sites – one downtown for seniors and one on the North Shore, which would be a multi-family building.
“This need that we’re trying to fill is based on the representation we’re seeing,” Achoba said on NL Newsday. “It’s based on the impact we’re hearing in communities and there is a need for more family housing, there is a need for more senior housing.”
“These are rental units and they will be tailored to individuals income and socio-economic status. I mean I think that the housing market is so challenging now for anyone to purchase and so what we’re trying to do is bring in some low-cost affordable housing to our community.”
Achoba says the projects would cost between $15 and $25-million each, for a total of between $30 and $60-million.
If the application is successful, the money would come from the Province’s $3-billion Community Housing Fund.
