The BC Government says there will be a single lane of traffic in each direction on the Trans Canada Highway, south of Spences Bridge, starting this Friday, Dec. 15.
The return of two-way traffic in the area comes a little over two years after floods and landslides during the atmospheric river storms of November 2021. A temporary single-lane Falls Creek bridge has been in place in the Jackass Mountain area since 2021.
“Getting to this phase of the Falls Creek project marks a significant achievement in our recovery from the 2021 atmospheric river and our efforts to enhance the safety and reliability of Highway 1,” Transportation Minister Rob Fleming said, in a statement.
“Over the last two years, I have seen the remarkable dedication of our ministry staff, contractors, and Indigenous and municipal leaders who have come together to support the recovery from the unprecedented floods. Our government is committed to rebuilding safe and efficient infrastructure that can withstand future climate events.”
“At every section of the highway work is being performed, even in these winter months.”
The Ministry says a new three-lane permanent Falls Creek bridge – which will be more resilient against severe weather conditions – is currently under construction, with an expected completion date next year.
“It has been a long two years for our community since the atmospheric river event and how the aftermath impacted our daily commute,” Jordan Spinks, the Chief of Kanaka Bar Indian Band, said in the statement.
“We look forward to some normalcy in our daily commute and a continued working relationship with all involved with the Falls Creek Highway Project.”
The Ministry cautions that there will be reduced speed limits in the area until construction is complete.
Work is also progressing on another bridge replacement along the Trans Canada at Nicomen, about 19 kilometres south of Spences Bridge. A third bridge at Tank Hill is also currently being designed, with construction expected to start next year.
