A woman from Ashcroft has been tapped as just one of 21 people in BC who has been bestowed with the provincial government’s Medal of Good Citizenship for 2023.
Vivian Edwards has been living and volunteering in Ashcroft since moving there in 1995 after spending time previously in Cache Creek, the Loon Lake area and Vancouver, where she was raised.
Edwards was nominated by her fellow volunteer from Ashcroft whom she has worked with for years.
“We work together quite a lot with the Community Resources Society and Christmas Hampers,” said Edwards. “Every year we put together Christmas hampers for people who need the hampers. They’re delivered to Clinton, Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Spences Bridge and the First Nation bands in the area.”
She notes this isn’t nearly the extent of her volunteer work.
“I belong to the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. There are ten of us that do it. Last year we did over 500 income tax returns for low income people,” Edwards told Radio NL.
“Vivian Edwards, a dedicated and selfless volunteer, is a shining example of community service and good will. For decades, Edwards has actively participated in various local committees, demonstrating her unwavering dedication to the betterment of her community. Her positive outlook and tireless efforts have left a lasting impact on numerous organizations,” said the BC government in her biography for the Medal of Good Citizenship award.
Saying she’s honored and humbled by the provincial award, she says she intends to continue her volunteer work in Ashcroft.
“I guess its a bit selfish. It makes me feel good to help. I don’t want to be bored. I live alone, and I don’t want to sit around and do nothing in my house, so it’s neat to get out and help.”
Edwards has been living and volunteering in Ashcroft since 1995 after moving there following the passing of her husband.
Born and raised in Vancouver, she says she has no intentions of returning there, saying she loves her small-town life and the friends she’s made and works to continue helping.
Congratulations to the #MedalofGoodCitizenship recipients for 2023! You have made a tremendous difference in the lives of others and in your community. Thank you for making our province a better place. #bcpoli @BCGovNews https://t.co/GEF7BQC7OK pic.twitter.com/yJFFfElMCn
