Snow plow clearing a highway/via Yellowhead Road and Bridge
A warning for drivers this weekend throughout the region.
Yellowhead Road and Bridge Nicola, which is in-charge of keeping the local highways clear, is warning of a wave of snow to start hitting portions of the Southern Interior from Friday evening and through Saturday.
“The lower elevations around Merritt and the Fraser Canyon will remain dry until later in the evening but the Coquihalla Summit, Okanagan Connector and Helmer Summit should see snowfall from this afternoon into Saturday morning,” said Yellowhead in a notification.
“The Coquihalla summit will have the highest accumulations of the area with the heaviest snowfall starting this evening and remaining steady overnight.”
The biggest dump is forecast for the Coquihalla to Snow Shed Hill, where anywhere from 10 to 20 centimeters is forecast for tonight, and as much as 6 centimeters on Saturday.
Yellowhead is also warning of smaller accumulations on the Coq from Merritt to Lac Le Jeune of 3 to 6 centimeters tonight, and 1 to 4 centimeters Saturday.
The Okanagan Connector is also expecting as much as 6 centimeters tonight, and 6 centimeters on Saturday.
The Fraser Canyon could also get around 10 centimeters tonight and tomorrow.
Yellowhead has also issued a note of caution.
“Please slow down and drive to conditions this evening. Plow trucks will be out removing snow and restoring traction as well as putting out chemicals to help prevent icy conditions,” said Yellowhead Road and Bridge.
“When flashing lights are on, our trucks are in ‘Winter Work Mode’ and require extra room to perform their necessary duties. Remember to never pass a plow truck on the right and road conditions in front of the plow truck will be worse than behind it.”
