It is advanced voting day for Chase residents, as the village looks to fill an empty council seat.
The 2024 Village of Chase By-Election comes after former councillor Ron Harder resigned in November, to relocate due to health concerns.
Village CAO and Chief Election Officer Joni Heinrich says six candidates are running for the seat.
It includes Rick Berrigan, Alison Lauzon, Kim Campbell, Dan Stevens, Tanya Wilson, and Beverly Iglasias.
“I think it is pretty indicitive of a pretty active membership in our community about council and about what council is doing. So it is quite nice to see quite a number of people interested in participating.”
Heinrich says two of the six candidates – Rick Berrigan and Alison Lauzon – both served on that council previously.
“Rick Berrigan was on a number of councils, including when I was hired on as CAO back in 2011 – he was a council member for a number of terms and then he was Mayor for one term a few years back and he is coming forward again, throwing his hat in the ring,” she said.
“Allison Lauzon was a councillor on the last council for one term and then she didn’t run in the last election but she has given it a lot of thought since then and decided she would throw her hat back in.”
As for the other four candidates, Heinrich outlined some details about them.
“Kim Campbell has not been on council in Chase. Dan Stevens is a younger guy — not of the typical age group of most of our candidates who are usually retired,” she said.
“Tanya Wilson who is relatively new to the community, but very active and committed from my understanding and Beverly Iglasias who has run a couple times before and hadn’t been successful, so she thought she would try again.”
Elidable voters in Chase are asked to bring two pieces of identification to the polls, voter details can be found on the Village website.
Early voting goes till 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Village of Chase Office.
General election day is set for Saturday, January 20 – from 8 a.m. till 8 p.m. – at the Chase Community Hall.
