A heads up to drivers as the BC Government says it will be closing the Trans-Canada through the Fraser Canyon at 9 p.m. tonight, Jan. 23.
It says the closure will allow crews to remove the temporary bridge at the Falls Creek (Jackass Mountain) construction site, with the highway set to reopen at 5 a.m. tomorrow, Jan. 24.
“The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is working directly with emergency services to facilitate their access through the site during this time,” the province said, in a statement.
This section of Highway 1 was significantly damaged during the atmospheric rivers storms in Nov. 2021. The temporary bridge was installed in a couple of months, allowing a single-lane of alternating traffic to traverse with the help of a pilot car.
Two-way traffic access in the area was restored in mid-December.
Drivers travelling between the Interior and the Lower Mainland can detour using either the Coquihalla or the Crowsnest Highway.
