A new project is set to get underway this year to bring some additional atmosphere to the Tranquille corridor.
The plan involves putting LED lighting and new banners on every banner pole to light up a nearly 4 kilometer stretch.
“Actually putting up LED light bars on every banner pole between the Overlander Bridge and North Hills Mall at this point,” said North Shore Business Improvement Association Executive Director Jeremy Heighton. “There will be 166 light tubes and new banners going on these poles.”
Co-initiated by Tourism Kamloops and the North Shore BIA, Heighton says the goal is to add a unique feel to the stretch.
“This would add some light factor, some glow factor if you would, to the sidewalk areas as well,” said Heighton. “Then when you get up into areas like around Bright Eye [Brewing] or Red Beard [Cafe], it actually adds some evening ambiance as well to the patio placements.”
Heighton notes the lighting system they intend to purchase can be controlled remotely, giving them different lighting options.
“We can actually set each of the three sub-districts of the Tranquille corridor with their own color,” noted Heighton, saying its part of their effort to help with navigation and wayfinding. “But as you move forward, we have National Autism Day is purple, or Valentines Day is red. We could actually change all of the lights on the corridor to match some of the festival-type of ideas and celebratory days.”
The project is expected to get underway sometime in the spring, with expectations it will be completed by October.
It’s expected to cost of around $250,000 dollars, which Heighton says will be financed through grant money and the city’s existing Public Realm Improvement Fund.
