Kamloops RCMP say they used a taser to take an intoxicated person with a knife into custody on the North Shore on Thursday night.
Mounties say they were called to the 700-block of Sydney Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Feb. 22, where they say a suspect who was uncooperative was arrested for possessing a weapon for “a dangerous purpose.”
“Due to the presence of a weapon on an uncooperative suspect and the risk it presented to the public and officers, police utilized less lethal intervention options to safely take the man into custody,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said.
Evelyn says officers on scene first used an “extended range impact weapon” with sponge-tip rounds, before using a conductive energy device.
“The suspect was then safely taken into custody and transported to the hospital with minor injuries, for assessment and care,” Evelyn added. “A knife was seized by police as part of the investigation.”
Mounties say the transit buses were briefly diverted from the area while police were on scene.
Evelyn says people who witnessed the incident or those with information on it are being told to contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-5447.
