Former Kamloops Blazers defenceman Olen Zellweger has been named the American Hockey League’s rookie of the month for February.
The 20-year-old scored four goals and added eight assists, giving him 12 points in 10 games for the San Diego Gulls last month.
A second round pick of the Anaheim Ducks, Zellweger is third among AHL defensemen and tied for third among all rookies with 37 points in 44 games in his first season of professional hockey. He also has one assist in four NHL games with the Ducks this season.
The reigning CHL Defenceman of the Year, Zellweger was the Blazers’ prized pick up from the Everett Silvertips at the deadline last year as Kamloops geared up to host the Memorial Cup.
A native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., Zellweger played in the AHL All-Star Classic last month alongside former Blazers teammate Logan Stankoven, who was named rookie of the month for November.
Belleville Senators forward Angus Crookshank was named the AHL’s Player of the Month for November, while Ivan Prosvetov of the Colorado Eagles was named the AHL’s Goaltender of the Month.
Congratulations @OlenZellweger 🥳
