As TRU works to move on from last year’s horrific car crash which devastated the Men’s Volleyball team, next week will see a survivor of another tragic incident provide some insight to students and others.
Kaleb Dahlgren, one of 13 survivors of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash which took the lives of 16 others, will be speaking at TRU’s Evening of Champions event on Tuesday, March 12th.
Dahlgren says he intends to explain to the crowd how he was able to overcome his survivors guilt.
“When I first kind of came to my senses, I was going to send a big text message to one of my best friends and my roommate, and realized he was never going to receive that message, because he wasn’t there,” said Dahlgren. “The hard part about it is that he was sitting behind me.”
Dahlgren says he also wants to be able to provide the crowd at TRU with how he was able to overcome the adversity he went through.
“If roles were reversed, and I was the one who passed away, and they were in my shoes, how would I want them to live their life?” Dahlgren pointed out. “I want them to pursue their passions, their dreams, their goals and live life to the fullest. And to always make the most of their situation.”
Since his recovery, Dahlgren has gone on to earn a degree from York University — graduating as Valedictorian — and is now studying to be a chiropractor.
On top of becoming an author as well, Dahlgren also does motivational speaking engagements across North America and Europe.
The TRU Evening of Champions event runs from 5pm to 7pm at the Campus Activity Center.
