The City of Kamloops and the Thompson-Nicola Regional District will both be issuing test alerts on Voyent Alert this Friday, May 10.

The TNRD will be sending its alert out around 10:30 a.m., with the City expected to follow suit around 2 p.m.. The alerts will be going out by SMS, phone, email or through the app, depending on how people signed up.

“In the event of an evacuation alert or order is put in place due to flood or wildfire, this system will be a vital way of alerting and updating the public,” the City of Kamloops said, in a statement.

“If used, the notification will include important information about the event and instructions for if any action is required.”

“The TNRD uses Voyent Alert! to share information when the Emergency Operations Centre is activated, including evacuation alerts, evacuation orders, downgrading or rescinding these notices, and other relevant emergency notices,” the TNRD added, in a statement.

“All TNRD emergency updates are also shared on the TNRD’s new, dedicated emergency website and on social media.”

The TNRD also says it is only able to issue evacuation alerts or orders for properties within its electoral areas. It is asking people in municipalities that feed into the TNRD to reach out to their respective local government if want alerts.

“With hot and dry weather in the immediate forecast, the risk of wildfires and flooding due to snow melt will increase in many areas, and we also want to urge the public to be prepared,” TNRD Emergency Program Coordinator Mike Knauff said.

“Have your own emergency plan in place in case your property is placed on Evacuation Order. Know the risk levels for your property, and make any preparations that you can to help your home withstand a potential flood or wildfire.”

People are being urged to ensure that their Voyent Alert app is working as some devices tend to “offload” apps if it is not used for a prolonged period of time.
