RCMP say two people were killed after a crash between two semi-trucks on the Trans-Canada Highway near Sorrento last night, May 27.
Police say an eastbound semi flipped over on its side into the oncoming lane after it failed to make a right turn on the highway around 11:45 p.m.. They say a semi heading in the other direction crashed into the vehicle as it was not able to stop in time.
“Sadly, both the driver and passenger of the flipped semi-truck passed away at the scene,” BC RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy said, in a statement.
“The driver of the oncoming truck suffered minor injuries.”
Grandy says the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
The highway is currently open to a single lane of alternating traffic, with drivers being told to expect minor delays. It was previously closed for several hours, with the next update from Drive BC expected at 2 p.m. this afternoon, May 28.
People who witnessed the crash of those with video of it are being told to contact the Chase RCMP at 250-679-3221.
