Kamal Grewal, who is running for the NDP nomination in Kamloops Centre/submitted to Radio NL
The NDP in Kamloops Centre has confirmed it’s first official candidate for the nomination — and it’s not who you might think.
Kamal Grewal, a former student advisor at TRU who now works in the private sector, has been declared a nominee for the candidacy for Kamloops Centre.
“Here in BC, we’ve been through a lot. And, through it all, the BC NDP team has put people at the heart of making life better through unprecedented challenges – a global pandemic, massive wildfire emergencies, heat dome and flooding – while protecting and making investments in vital public services, all the while leading in job creation and economic growth,” stated Grewal in a release this morning.
“Now, our province and Kamloops are facing global inflation and a new set of challenges. David Eby is tackling the big problems facing our beautiful province. And he’s getting things done for people,” she continued. “Building more homes people can afford. Fighting against inflation and rising interest rates by easing everyday costs. Attracting good clean jobs and training people in an economy that works better for people, and he’s strengthening healthcare by investing in hospitals and bringing more doctors to BC. That’s what we need right now.”
“And, that’s why I am running to be the NDP candidate and MLA for Kamloops,” said Grewal.
Officials with the local riding executive say Kamloops City Councillor Bill Sarai, who has publicly stated his intention to run for the NDP in the riding, has not been officially declared a nomination candidate yet, saying his vetting process hasn’t been completed.
It comes as sources within NDP circles locally have told Radio NL of frustration with Sarai for going public with his intention to run for the provincial nomination before completing the vetting process.
Neither Kamloops Ridings — Kamloops Centre or Kamloops-North Thompson — have declared dates for their candidate selection process.
However, riding officials in Kamloops-North Thompson have confirmed to Radio NL that a yet-unnamed candidate has stepped forward and is going through the BC NDP’s vetting process at the moment.
The provincial NDP executive has confirmed that dates for nomination meetings in the the Kamloops ridings have not been set, though local officials with both ridings are anticipating the nominations for both ridings are expected to be set by mid-to-late July.
It comes as the New Democrats have already declared over 20 incumbent and non-incumbent candidates around the province.
