Western Canada Theatre is all set for it’s 49th season.
After a record number of subscribers attended productions at the Sagebrush and Pavilion theatres in 2023/24 the magic will continue in the 2024/25 Season.
Artistic Director James MacDonald says the fall will be here before we know it is great to unveil things now as a way to get things in advance to plan for the fall in the winter.
MacDonald says as soon as these types of announcements are made, it is already starting to look at the following year.
“We in fact are looking at the following season because it’s our 50th anniversary so there’s lots of things we’re going to do to to make that an exciting season. And we hope that you know, we’re so proud of the season that’s coming up next year and we hope that it’s really going to be a lead up to that.”
The upcoming season will have something for theatre goers of all kinds. From beloved Disney classics, to new Canadian comedies, there is something for everyone.
The season will kick off with The Woman in Black.
“A couple of years ago, I was actually in London and I saw it it’s a played in the West End for about 40 years. It was one of the most famous productions there and he couldn’t get the rights to it and the rights just popped open last year so I nabbed it for Kamloops. It’s an absolute perfect ghost story for the theater. It’s about a guy who hires a young actor to relive the experiences that he had when he was a young lawyer at this haunted house. And it’s just you know, it’s got all sorts of fantastic lights and sound effects very spooky. I won’t get into it because I don’t want it to have any spoilers but like it’s a wonderful play.”
One of the highlights of the year is always the show that runs around the holidays and this year the magic of Disney will hit the Sagebrush with Beauty and the Beast.
“The wonderful thing about Beauty and the Beast is that people know it from different places. They know from the movie, they know it from the recent movie, they might have seen the musical. And the great thing about it is that it is a ballet once the thing that you expect it’s got beautiful costumes, pageantry, lots of great humor, dancing, you know, wonderful singing beautiful love story at the heart of it. But it’s also a nice surprise to see on stage. I’ve seen it several times on stage. I just love it every time I see it.“
