A first-of-its-kind event for Kamloops is set to hit the skies tonight above Tk’emlups.
The Band, in partnership with Tourism Kamloops, is putting on a drone light display.
Much like shaped fireworks, the drones are able to create unique aerial designs, but without the loud bangs and potential for fire, to mark National Indigenous People’s Day this Friday.
“A great day to shine a spotlight on our incredible culture,” said Tourism Kamloops Community Development and Engagement Director Lisa White as part of an interview with Radio NL. “The celebration starts at Riverside Park. The full evening of festivities carries over to the Pow Wow Arbor with the aerial light show happening at 10pm.”
White says its part of a broader goal Tourism Kamloops has to work more closely with Tk’emlups.
“We’ve have a lot of really fantastic conversations about the potential for Indigenous tourism experiences,” said White. “But it’s about sort of taking our time and looking at it in the right ways, and really supporting Tk’emlups and what makes sense for them.”
White says tonight’s display above Tk’emlups, which should be visible in many parts of Kamloops, is the first time a drone display will be held in Kamloops, and represents one of the first displays of its kind to be held in BC outside the Lower Mainland.
“Definitely encourage everyone to enjoy and to take it in. It’s very new to Kamloops, and we’re just so excited for what it’s gonna be.”
The drone light show on Friday comes ahead of a similar event being planned by the City of Kamloops for Canada Day.
A drone show has been scheduled for July 1st to replace the traditional fireworks, which have been cancelled this year due to fire concerns.
