Preliminary data from Environment Canada shows that 14 B.C. communities either set or tied daily temperature records for July 20.
The weather agency says Lytton reached a high of 41.2 C on that day, breaking a record of 40.6 C set in 1946.
Records were also set in Vernon, Princeton, and Merritt on Saturday.
Vernon’s day time high of 37.8 C broke the old record of 37.5 C set in 1979, while Merritt recorded a high of 37.9 C – 0.9 degrees higher than the 37 C set in 1994. Princeton meanwhile reached 37.3 C, enough to eclipse the 37.2 C set way back in 1931.
Temperatures are forecast to climb even higher on Sunday, with the forecast calling for a high of at least 40 C in Kamloops, before the heatwave begins to ease.
