The Trans-Canada Highway has reopened to traffic between Spences Bridge and Cache Creek, through drivers are being told to prepare for closures on short notice.
The highway was closed in both directions on Sunday evening because of the nearby Shetland Creek wildfire, which is still estimated be around 200 square kilometres in size.
“All is good out on the fire grounds,” Ashcroft Fire Chief Josh White said in a 3 p.m. update Tuesday.
In a Monday evening update, Ashcroft Fire Rescue said the Shetland Creek fire had not crossed the Trans-Canada, save for “one or two very small spots” which were quickly actioned by local structure protection and forestry crews.
“The structures at Ashcroft Ranch are still 7.5 km away from the fire lines,” the Monday update said. “Even with this wind, the lines are doing well. As of 9:30 this evening, we can confirm that the fire has not crossed Hat Creek Rd..”
DriveBC says the travel advisory will be in effect between Highway 8 at Spences Bridge and Cornwall Rd., 9 km south of Cache Creek.
“Wildfire activity may cause highway to close on short notice,” the update said. “Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling and consider alternate routes. No commercial vehicle access on Highway 8.”
The next DriveBC update is expected at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, July 24.
