Kamal Grewal, who is running for the NDP nomination in Kamloops Centre/submitted to Radio NL
The NDP candidate for Kamloops Centre is taking aim at city council, as available day spaces for the homeless are disappearing.
“There’s a municipal failure here that is disconcerting and worrisome,” said Kamal Grewal in a news release sent to media outlets in the city. “It’s intolerable for a city with a population exceeding 100,000 to fail to provide these essential services.”
Her comments come as the Mustard Seed has shut down its day space, while the lease for The Loop drop in center in North Kamloops is up, meaning its operational status remains unclear.
Speaking with Radio NL, Grewal argues the city should have moved more quickly to reach out for provincial help.
“I feel this issue has been highlighted for over two months. It was circulated. A whole lot of people, a whole lot of organizations, have been worried about this. I think we needed to get together earlier, sooner than this. Not on the last day,” said Grewal.
The City of Kamloops has no operational involvement with the Mustard Seed or The Loop.
It has announced its working on closing a land deal to establish the North Shore Access Hub.
A location — and a potential opening date for the Access Hub — have not been revealed.
