Chilcotin slide debris flow coming down the Fraser River where the Thompson River meets at Lytton/via Connor Thomas on Facebook
The Village of Lytton is now waiting to see how much longer the Fraser River through that community is going to be a no-go due to the Chilcotin slide.
Mayor Denise O’Connor says the debris flow went through their point on the Fraser yesterday, creating an impromptu community gathering.
“The Parish Hall where we meet for council meetings and such is an incredible vantage point of the Fraser River looking toward Lillooet coming down,” said O’Connor. “We had a gathering there of 15 to 20 [who] people showed up.”
While water levels have been coming down, O’Connor notes its left a sizeable mess on the banks of the Fraser.
“Lots of debris left on the sand banks on the shores. The water’s still pretty muddy, and pieces of debris still coming down,” she noted.
O’Connor says where there hasn’t been any real damage to Lytton from the slide flow, she notes the biggest issue for the village is the restoration of the Lytton Ferry service.
“That always impacts the community. The people who live across the River then have to walk the walking bridge to get across.”
Yellowhead Road and Bridge, which runs the Lytton Ferry, says it expects its service to be out for the rest of Wednesday.
The company did pull the ferry from the water ahead of the flow making it to Lytton.
The GM of YRB for the Lytton Ferry says they believe the terminal infrastructure has survived the flow as well.
It’s still unclear when the service will resume.
