The Kamloops Performance Cycling Centre is speaking out about damage being done to bike trails and tracks in the City.
Earlier this week, the damage being done to the new Kamloops All-Wheel Pump Track was raised at City Council, which noted that motorized bikes and dirt bikes have damaged the asphalt at the new track at the top of Juniper, which opened less than a month ago.
“It’s happening everywhere. Barnhartvale on the playgrounds, soccer fields. It’s bad in Pineview, also Kenna Cartwright. It’s becoming a trend,” says KPCC President Cheryl Beattie.
Beattie notes motorized bikes aren’t designed for the trails and pump track, saying the problem has become widespread.
She says a recent video of a young man on a dirt bike swerving through kids on the new pump track drew quite a reaction online.
“I think our goal here is to educate. These types of bikes aren’t permitted. Maybe some people don’t know. For the community the best thing they can do is to report to Community Services whenever they see it,” Beattie added.
Beattie says she hopes it doesn’t take a major incident to draw more awareness to the situation.
The KPCC maintains the Pump Track and handles all damage repairs — including costs — to both the Track, as well as trails across Kamloops.
