RCMP have confirmed that the young rider of an electric bike was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, following a head-on crash in Juniper Thursday night.
“On August 15, 2024, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Kamloops RCMP responded to a vehicle and E-bike collision. The collision occurred in the 2700 block of Qu’appelle Blvd,” said the RCMP in a statement.
RCMP say initial findings suggest a young person riding an Surron electric dirt bike along Qu’appelle Boulevard and collided with an oncoming westbound vehicle.
“The youth suffered serious, life-threatening injuries, and was immediately taken to hospital,” said the RCMP. “The cause of the collision remains under investigation.”
It comes as locals have apparently been raising red flags for quite some time about the dangers of E-bike riding in the area.
“The frustrations behind having to continue to ask the public, when really we’re talking about a much smaller group than the public, but continuing to ask for respect from these riders in the community because of the damage that’s being done not only to the Pump Track, but to the cross country climbing trail and the bike ranch,” a Juniper resident who wished not to be identified.
“It’s happening everywhere. Barnhartvale on the playgrounds, soccer fields. It’s bad in Pineview, also Kenna Cartwright. It’s becoming a trend,” Kamloops Performance Cycling Coalition President Cheryl Beattie told Radio NL earlier this week, saying that she hopes it “doesn’t take a major incident to draw more awareness to the situation.”
RCMP are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or the events leading up to the collision, including dash-cam footage, to contact the Kamloops RCMP.
