Residents and visitors to the Kamloops area will soon have access to an online map that shows all of the movies and TV shows that have been filmed in the area.
Thompson Nicola Film Commissioner Terri Hadwin says the interactive map that will highlight locations where things were filmed is being brought back following a number of requests for it.
“This is a map that showcases the entire region and all of the various different types of productions that have been filmed in our area,” Hadwin said. “People could click on a link and potentially even visit the spot where that filming has happened.”
“Any type of film production that we’ve had in our region, its all listed under the past productions of our website but we would really love to have this map element so that people, especially those who are not from here, have some guidance of what is nearby that they can visit.”
Hadwin tells Radio NL the map is expected to be launched sometime this fall.
“It’ll have almost a tourism type of icon so if people maybe want to visit the site where Power Rangers was filmed in downtown Kamloops, they can say ‘you know what, here is a photo of me where this iconic scene happened’ and so people can get excited and visit the spot,” Hadwin added.
There have been some major productions shot in the Kamloops-area over the past couple of years including Season 2 of The Last of Us, as well as Tracker, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Jurassic World Dominion.
The Kamloops-area film industry brought in about $18 million in revenue in 2022, and Hadwin previously told Radio NL that was figure expected to be doubled by the end of 2024.
Hadwin also says while there has been some interest in a feasibility study and the business case, work continues to try and entice potential investors to invest in the Kamloops Film Studio.
“It would definitely spur a lot of economic growth, so that is something that is always on my desk,” Hadwin said. “But it is challenging to bring it to the forefront when I’ve got seven productions at any given time that are looking for my attention to try to bring them to the area.”
“But a film studio is still something that I think would be excellent for our region.”
