The semi-truck that crashed through the guardrail on a bridge near Sicamous early Saturday, causing the Trans Canada Highway to close for several hours has been pulled from the water.
The driver – who was the only person in the truck – was killed at the scene.
It took dive teams and heavy tow trucks to retrieve the truck according to a release from the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.
The CSRD also says “multiple” environmental and spill response agencies are inspecting the extent of the contamination in the water and working on clean-up plans. They say a number of containment booms have been deployed to manage the diesel fuel spilled from the truck.
“The Sicamous Beach Park remains closed to the public. Additional affected areas along the shoreline may also be closed off as needed,” it said, in an update. “The public is asked to continue to stay away from these areas until clean-up can be completed.”
While there were brief impacts to boat traffic in the Sicamous Narrows and vehicle traffic on the Trans-Canada as clean up work was taking place, things should be back to normal this afteroon.
The CSRD does caution drivers that there may be additional short-term closures or single-lane alternating traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway as work to repair the bridge is expected to begin on Monday, Aug. 26.
