The sudden cancellation of a daycare contract by the City of Kamloops has led to a number of open questions and not many answers to this point.
Late Friday afternoon, the City announced it was parting ways with the Saltair Childcare Society, which operates which was set to operate a new 36-space facility in Station Plaza at 510 Lorne Street.
While not providing details as to why, the City said it has “lost confidence” in the organization’s ability to provide “the level of care they would expect in a child care partner.”
The Vancouver Island-based organization, which also runs daycares at Ralph Bell and Happyvale elementary schools in Kamloops, has not responded to requests for comments from Radio NL.
Brett Mineer looked into some of the complaints made against the Saltair Childcare Society, which was doing business as Inquiring Little Minds, when it comes to its operations at the Ralph Bell daycare. Those concerns were investigated by Interior Health, the details of which are available online.
“This operator has taken corrective actions to address immediate compliance concerns,” Interior Health told Radio NL in a statement. “Interior Health Licensing will continue to closely monitor and work with them to ensure compliance with the Act and Regulation.”
The health authority says when it gets complaints about a childcare operator, its licensing officer “immediately investigates” to ensure that corrective measures are taken, if needed.
“Under provincial legislation, we are mandated to process licensing applications, conduct inspections, investigate complaints, provide support and guidance to operators, and enforce regulations to ensure childcare facilities are safe and compliant,” the statement added.
“Child care operators are required to be in compliance with the provincial Community Care and Assisted Living Act the Child Care Licensing Regulation.”
Here is what we know about the situation concerning the Saltair Childcare Society so far.
