Following the public assent process, the TNRD has not received support to establish fire protection service in Birch Island.

The petition period was open between August 28th and October 4th, for property owners within the proposed Birch Island Fire Protection service area.

There was a proposal to expand the existing Vavenby Fire Protection Service Area boundary to include Birch Island and adjacent properties.

This expansion would have covered the area between the District of Clearwater and the current Vavenby Fire Protection Response boundary.

In August, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District replaced a referendum with a petition process to gauge support for the existing Vavenby Fire Protection Service Area to be expanded to include properties in Birch Island.

The District says the minimum threshold has not been met for the petition to pass.
