A heads up for drivers who use Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon.
Later this week and part of next week, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit has announced intermittent shutdowns of the TransCanada due to some work on a rail overpass.
“Drivers are advised that Highway 1 at Tank Hill, 14 kilometres east of Lytton, will be closed overnight on Friday, March 21, 2025, and in the afternoon from March 24 until March 26, 2025,” said the Ministry in a note.
“The closure is necessary for the installation of steel girders that will span the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail line as part of the new overpass.”
This is a complete shutdown of the highway in both directions.
Ministry is warning that the afternoon shutdowns on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be somewhat variable, as they will have schedule the shutdowns around the trains that are coming through.
Accommodations are being made to allow emergency vehicles to make it through the closures.
The Ministry is recommending drivers take the Coquihalla.
The project itself is designed to create an overpass so that drivers will be able to cruise right over top of the tracks, rather than being forced to stop and wait as the trains are passing by.
During the summer months, when trains are deliberately slowed down along the stretch due to concerns about fires, drivers could find themselves stuck waiting for a train to pass for quite some time.
The project, according to the BC Government, is due to be completed by December of this year.
