The City of Kamloops is reopening the Parkview Activity Centre, located at 500 McDonald Avenue, for short-term community use starting Monday. The facility will be available for one-time or short-term bookings, providing extra space for community events, programs, and group activities.
This reopening follows the City’s recent application to the Province’s ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund, which aimed to convert the Parkview site into a licensed child care facility as part of the City’s Build Kamloops initiative. This past April, the Province informed the City that the application was unsuccessful due to the program being significantly oversubscribed.
“We were hopeful to expand child care options in our community through this space,” said Sherri Holmes, Manager of Sport, Recreation, and Wellness for the City. “While it’s disappointing we didn’t secure the funding, it opened up an opportunity to think creatively about how the Parkview facility can serve the community in other ways.”
Holmes explained that the Parkview facility is a smaller, flexible space that can support a wide range of uses. “It’s a great location for one-off events, arts groups, sport clubs, and cultural organizations who need a place to gather, especially given how limited our indoor spaces can be at times.”
City Council has directed staff to explore longer-term social and health-related options for the site, including potential uses such as child care or a medical clinic. “We’re actively researching the best long-term fit for Parkview,” Holmes said. “Our goal is to ensure the space is used to its fullest potential and meets community needs, whether that’s through social services, health programs, or other community-focused initiatives.”
In the meantime, Holmes highlighted the importance of the facility remaining accessible. “Opening the space for short-term bookings allows it to stay vibrant and responsive to community demand, without locking in a single use before we know what’s best.”
Starting June 2nd, community members and organizations can submit booking requests via the City’s website at Kamloops.ca/BookNow.
“We encourage everyone to consider Parkview as a space for your next event or program,” Holmes added. “It’s an excellent way to support community connection while we work on the bigger picture.”
