The Kamloops Blazers have made a move to shore up their future options, flipping a prospect defenseman for a pair of WHL Prospect Draft picks Friday.
The Blazers moved 2008-born D Kaden Meyer to the Calgary Hitmen for a 4th round pick in 2028 and a 6th round pick in next year’s draft in 2026.
Meyer was originally the 6th round pick of the Blazers in 2023.
He was signed by the club but never appeared in a regular season game.
For the Hitmen, they’re going through a rebuilding process after spending a lot of their assets on this past seasons bid for a WHL Championship, which included a deal to pick up Kamloops-native and Canucks defensive prospect Sawyer Mynio from the Seattle Thunderbirds.
Calgary would eventually go down to Lethbridge in seven in the 2nd round.
Meyer spent this past season in the BCEHL U-18 league as a 16-year-old with the Greater Vancouver Canadians.
The 6’3” 198lbs defenseman put up 11 goals and 39 assists for 50 points in 36 games.
He also played a handful of games in the Pacific Junior Hockey League in Coquitlam.
The move is being viewed as a vote of confidence for their younger defensive prospects, including 2008-born Dryden Deobald, as well as ’09 blue line prospects Joaquin Geras and Madden Tymchak.
Observers say all three rookies have a chance of cracking the Blazers’ starting line-up this fall.
