The City of Kamloops has officially started on Stage 1 of Phase 3 of the Tranquille Sanitary Main and Road Enhancement Project, marking the beginning of a major two-year infrastructure upgrade along Tranquille Road between Crestline Street and Southill Street.
The initial work this week focuses on the intersection of Tranquille Road and Crestline Street, with single-lane alternating traffic in place between Crestline and Shriner Street until June 14th. Construction is expected to continue through the summer months, with crews moving progressively west to east along Tranquille Road.
Adam Gordon, Project Delivery Manager with the City of Kamloops, explains the scope and timeline. “We’re starting with some work at the Crestline intersection this week to prepare for the main construction phases. Following that, we’ll be progressing west to east over the summer, aiming to complete roughly half of the project by the end of this year,” he said.
The project addresses the replacement of an aging sanitary main beneath Tranquille Road that was identified as needing urgent repair through a city study conducted nearly a decade ago. Beyond the essential sewer main replacement, the project also includes a comprehensive road enhancement plan. New infrastructure will feature two 3.7-meter vehicle lanes separated by barrier curb and gutter, a 1.5-meter-wide concrete sidewalk on the north side, and a 3-meter-wide multi-use pathway on the south side. Grass swales will provide natural separation between pedestrian and vehicle areas.
Gordon emphasized the importance of these improvements for both safety and connectivity. “Alongside the sanitary works, we’re adding active transportation infrastructure that will complete the final link connecting the Rivers Trail between MacArthur Island and the airport area. This means better, safer access for pedestrians and cyclists, which is a great benefit for the community.”
However, residents and commuters should prepare for traffic disruptions during construction. Tranquille Road will be open only to local traffic for driveway access, with no through traffic permitted. The City will implement detour routes through nearby streets such as Parkcrest and Greenfield to accommodate redirected traffic, transit, garbage pickup, and dangerous goods routes.
“We understand the inconvenience this causes and ask for the public’s patience,” said Gordon. “We recommend giving yourself extra travel time if you use this road regularly, especially for airport trips or daily commutes.”

Construction will pause over the winter months, resuming in spring 2026 to complete the remaining phases through to Southhill Street, with full project completion anticipated by fall 2026.
The project will be split into 3 stages:
- Stage 1 – 2025: Crestline Street to Downie Street
- Stage 2 – 2026: Downie Street to Windbreak Street
- Stage 3 – 2026: Windbreak Street to Southhill Street
