It’s been a challenging couple of days for BC Hydro crews in Kamloops, as it seems the utility has been playing “whack-a-mole” with at least two of their power disruptions which began on Sunday.
The latest — and seemingly most challenging outage is along the Tranquille corridor.
The continued problem for BC Hydro crews is the stretch from the 400 to 600 block of Tranquille.
Power went down along the stretch on Sunday afternoon just before 4pm, with BC Hydro reporting it as equipment failure.
The expectation was the repairs were to have been completed Monday morning, according to at least one local business along that stretch which has been impacted.
That expectation did not come to pass, and just when it seemed crews had tackled whatever issue it is which has been keeping the power down — reported at one point by BC Hydro as cable failure — at 1pm, the rug was pulled out from under the utility.
But just as BC Hydro was updating its outage page and adding the Tranquille to its “restored” list — 15 minutes later and the power went down again.
This has now put the loss of electricity for the 98 customers along that stretch in the 400 to 600 blk of Tranquille over the 24-hour mark as of just after 4pm.
Most of those 98 customers are commercial operations, including the local animal hospital, some of the social agencies such as Ask Wellness and Kamloops Immigrant Services, along with the Yew Street Food Hall.

Section of Kamloops which lost power overnight in Kamloops from around 4 to 6am, then again from around 9 to 9:30am Monday. This one of three significant power interruptions BC Hydro has been forced to deal with from Sunday, all said to be related to equipment failure/via BC Hydro.
On top of that, power went out for a wider swath of Kamloops — impacting around 2,700 customers — just before 9am on Monday covering a wider area of downtown and lower Sahali, as well as Thompson Rivers University and sections of the north shore.
But by 9:30, that outage was taken care of.
As it turns out, that same area was also cut off from the grid overnight, from around 4 to 6am Monday.
It comes as around 2,400 customers in the west of Kamloops saw their electricity go down on Sunday in the early afternoon from just before 2pm, as temperatures were in the low-to-mid 30’s.
Folks in areas including Aberdeen and further west toward the western end of the city were impacted by that outage — which is also being blamed on equipment failure.
Editor’s note: BC Hydro is estimating a 5pm fix for the current outage along the Tranquille corridor.
