A decision by the BC government to green-light Teck Resources to expand operations at its Highland Valley Copper mine is being met with a sense of relief in the region.
“It’s a major driver of our small economies in our communities here,” said Barbara Roden, Mayor of Ashcroft and Chair of the Thompson Nicola Regional District Board.
The provincial government has approved an environmental assessment certificate for Teck to undertake a major expansion project, which should keep the mine operational until the mid-2040’s.
It’s expected this will extend the life of the mine by at least 17 years, while also adding 200 more permanent jobs to the roughly 1,300 who are already employed on the site, which is located about 90 kilometers southwest of Kamloops.
During the initial work, as many as 1,250 people will be hired on as the expansion project gears up.
“This positive decision by the Government of B.C. will support extending the life of Canada’s largest copper mine, strengthening the North America critical minerals supply chain and contributing to jobs and economic activity,” said Jonathan Price, Teck President and CEO.
Had the extension not been granted, Teck would have been forced to start winding down its operations in 2028.
Roden says the move not only provides more well-paying jobs into the region, but also maintains financial stability for communities like Logan Lake, Merritt and Ashcroft as well.
“The big spin off is not necessarily the revenue from the business, the industry, the company… it’s the people that come here,” suggested Roden. “They’re using our schools; they’re shopping in our businesses and shops.”
“They’re the people who are volunteering their time. They’re the ones who are coaching the Little League. They’re the ones who are joining the service clubs,” added Roden.
Provided Teck is able to secure the remaining permits necessary, which is not expected to be a major hurdle, the company anticipates being able to launch its mine life extension project sometime in the fall.
