The City of Kamloops has announced that rehabilitation work on the Overlanders Bridge and its adjacent eastern multi-use pathway will begin in early July 2025. The project, which will continue into the fall, is part of the City’s proactive infrastructure maintenance strategy and will be carried out by River Valley Construction Services Ltd.
Improving Surface Conditions and Safety
The work will focus on select bridge joint locations where deteriorating concrete and asphalt have created increasingly rough driving conditions. At the same time, the eastern multi-use pathway will receive a new sand-textured epoxy surface to improve safety and rideability for cyclists and pedestrians.
“Anyone who’s driven over the bridge lately knows it’s not in great condition,” said Wayne Lockhart, Civic Construction Manager for the City. “This project is really about improving the surface of the bridge deck—especially at the joints—and eliminating those bumps that drivers have been feeling between sections.”
Lockhart emphasized that the work on the multi-use path is equally important. “The current condition of the multi-use path makes this work a requirement. It will improve the rideability and the safety for everyone using it.”
Traffic Disruptions and Lane Closures Expected
To complete the work safely, the City will implement phased lane closures. At least two lanes will remain open at all times, allowing for single-lane, two-way traffic flow, but delays and congestion are expected, especially during peak hours.
“We will be down to two lanes,” Lockhart noted. “So people should plan ahead—consider alternate routes if you can, or just expect some delays as we work through the different phases of the project.”
The multi-use pathway on the east side of the bridge will be fully closed during its resurfacing. Detours will be in place, and the public is advised to follow posted signage.
Not a Full Resurfacing—But a Vital Update
While this is not a full resurfacing project, the targeted rehabilitation will address the most critical problem areas and extend the functional life of the bridge.
“By focusing on the joints and resurfacing the pathway, we’re improving the experience for drivers and pathway users without the need for a full reconstruction,” Lockhart said.
