Visible progress is finally taking shape at the site of the future outdoor skating rink in Kamloops’ Riverside Park, with city officials confirming the project has moved beyond groundwork and into a more dynamic phase of development.
City of Kamloops Project Delivery Manager Adam Gordon said crews are now fully engaged in civil construction, including installation of the rink’s critical refrigeration infrastructure.
“We have Custom Ice, which is the subcontractor that’s going to be installing the refrigerated slab for us, is now on site and installing the major trench lines that will form the backbone of the rink’s refrigeration system,” said Gordon. “These brine lines are essential for keeping the ice surface properly cooled, and this part of the build will continue over the next few weeks.”
In addition to the underground work, the construction of a new Zamboni building on the western edge of the site is expected to begin shortly. This marks a shift in the project as most of the deep utility work has been completed and above-ground development accelerates.
“People will start to notice more happening when they’re down in the park,” Gordon said, noting the increased visibility of the project as the city heads into the summer events season. “With Music in the Park starting up soon and Canada Day festivities around the corner, it’s a good time to share what’s going on.”
Gordon assured residents and visitors that the city is working to minimize disruptions during major park events. Construction will pause on weekends and statutory holidays, including Canada Day, and crews are coordinating delivery schedules to avoid interfering with large gatherings, such as RootFest and other mid-week events.
While the work continues through 2025, the City still has its eyes set on an early 2026 grand opening for the facility.
“We’re currently aiming for January 2026,” said Gordon. “Crews hope to wrap up construction by the end of 2025, but we’ll need time for training, commissioning, and ensuring city staff are fully prepared before we open to the public.”
The Riverside Park skating rink, once completed, will feature a refrigerated surface designed for use throughout the winter season and is expected to become a new staple of Kamloops’ recreational offerings.
For now, park-goers are encouraged to enjoy the summer events while keeping an eye on the evolving project — a visible sign of year-round activity soon to come to Riverside Park.
