8:45pm UPDATE: The BC Wildfire Service is reporting at grassfire which broke out sometime in the late afternoon on Thursday in the area south of Royal Inland Hospital is now considered “Being Held.”
This is the term the Service uses when it believes it’s been able to create a guard around a fire to stop it expanding past that point.
While “being held,” the fire will still likely continue to burn inside the perimeter.
This could make for an uncomfortable overnight for those living downtown.
The City of Kamloops says fire crews are going to remain on the scene to mop up the remaining hot spots.
Kamloops Fire Rescue crews were initially called out shortly before 6pm on Thursday to a rapidly growing grass fire.
Initial indications were that it was burning in an area inside or near Peterson Creek Park.
However, on closer inspection, the fire was burning in the hills near the Glenfair Seniors Apartment complex near Royal Inland.
It’s not exactly clear when the fire got started, but it seemed to spread fairly quickly.
By 7pm, the BC Wildfire Service had updated its web portal, listing the blaze at 5 hectares in size and growing.
It would later revise down that figure to a very precise 3.07 hectares.
It’s not clear how many personnel were tasked with trying to control and contain the fire.
No indication at this point what may have set the blaze off.
The first major fire of the year within Kamloops city limits exploded on the eastern edge of Kenna Cartwright Park on May 24th.
This was witnessed by hundreds of BC Lions fans who had showed up at nearby Hillside Stadium to take part in the CFL club’s annual FanFest celebration on that Saturday.
KFR crews are currently on scene of a landscape fire near Peterson creek park in Kamloops BC.
