The Kamloops International Buskers Festival is set to take over Riverside Park from July 24 to 27, bringing world-class street performers, laughter, and community celebration back to the downtown waterfront. But as dazzling as the performances will be, the real magic this year might come from something a little more local: volunteers.
Organizers say they need 20 to 25 volunteers to help the event run smoothly — and they’re still actively looking for people to sign up. “It’s really important to have volunteers for the success of the event,” said Lucas Sweet, Event Coordinator. “They’re the ones who answer questions, guide attendees, and make the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone.”
Now in its sixth year, the free, family-friendly festival will showcase six award-winning international performers, including returning favourites like ZAP Circus (Australia) and Victor Rubilar (Argentina), as well as newcomers like Pancho Libre (Mexico) and HEROMACRO (Japan). Alongside the performances will be live music, artisan markets, food trucks, and a voting station for the Morelli Chertkow People’s Choice Award — one of the festival’s signature traditions.
But none of it happens without support from the community.
“We have two major volunteer roles,” Sweet explained. “There’s the Information Booth, where volunteers help answer questions and run the People’s Choice Award voting. It’s a great spot — you’re under a tent, in the shade, enjoying the shows while chatting with people.”
The second role is more mobile: Pitch Pals, as they’re called, roam the park, assist guests, and keep the good vibes going. “It’s very much about interacting with attendees and representing the festival,” said Sweet. “You’re part of the energy of the event.”
Each shift is three-and-a-half to four hours, and volunteers are only asked to commit to one shift, though more are always welcome. “We make it flexible and fun. You’ll get quick training on-site, and you’re always working alongside other volunteers,” said Sweet.
Whether you’re a long-time local or new to town, the Kamloops International Buskers Festival offers a chance to give back, meet people, and enjoy world-class entertainment — all while being part of something uniquely Kamloops.
