We now know when the work will begin.
Kamloops drivers and pathway users should prepare for changes starting Monday, July 14, as the City launches a major rehabilitation project on the Overlanders Bridge and its adjacent eastern multi-use pathway. The work, part of the City of Kamloops’ ongoing infrastructure maintenance plan, is expected to continue through the fall and will be carried out by River Valley Construction Services Ltd.
PHASE ONE: Beginning July 14
The first phase of the project will include reactivation of the traffic light at the bridge’s south entrance, which will help manage the flow of vehicles into a single lane. Drivers approaching the bridge from both the southeast and the north will be required to zipper merge—a method that allows alternating vehicles from each lane to merge efficiently and reduce congestion.
Targeted Improvements for Safety and Rideability
The rehabilitation focuses on select bridge joint locations where deteriorating concrete and asphalt have caused rough driving conditions. At the same time, the eastern multi-use pathway will be fully resurfaced with a sand-textured epoxy coating designed to improve traction and overall safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
“Anyone who’s driven over the bridge lately knows it’s not in great condition,” said Wayne Lockhart, Civic Construction Manager for the City. “This project is really about improving the surface of the bridge deck—especially at the joints—and eliminating those bumps that drivers have been feeling between sections.”
Lockhart added that the work on the multi-use pathway is equally essential. “The current condition of the pathway makes this work a requirement. It will improve the rideability and the safety for everyone using it.”
PEDESTRIAN/CYCLIST IMPACTS
The multi-use pathway will close completely beginning Monday, July 14 and remain closed during construction. Cyclists and pedestrians are advised to follow posted detour signage. Cyclists must dismount and walk their bikes when crossing the bridge on the detour route.
As an alternative, cyclists will be eligible for free transit while transporting their bikes on bus routes 1, 2, 3, and 10 during the pathway closure.
Expect Lane Closures and Delays
To complete the work safely, phased lane closures will be in effect throughout the project. At least two lanes will remain open at all times, maintaining a two-way traffic flow. However, the City warns that delays and congestion are expected, especially during peak travel times.
“We will be down to two lanes,” Lockhart said. “So people should plan ahead—consider alternate routes if you can, or just expect some delays as we work through the different phases of the project.”
Not a Full Resurfacing—But a Vital Update
While this is not a full bridge resurfacing, the targeted repairs will address the most critical problem areas and extend the functional life of the infrastructure.
“By focusing on the joints and resurfacing the pathway, we’re improving the experience for drivers and pathway users without the need for a full reconstruction,” Lockhart said.
