The Mounties in Kamloops say they have identified a “person of interest” in the fire which caught hold on Tuesday in Strathcona Park.
The RCMP say they’re also looking into whether this “person of interest” may be connected to a string of recent fires downtown as well.
Police say the fire itself is believed to have started at the top end of the bike and pedestrian path which runs through the top side of Strathcona Park around the intersection of Arbutus and Powers Road.
RCMP say by the time crews from Kamloops Fire Rescue arrived on scene, the fire — which started around 4pm — was fully involved.
It ended up scorching around 100 square meters of grass and shrub in the area before KFR crews were able to bring it under control around 6pm.
Mounties are asking for any witnesses — or anyone else with information about this fire and others downtown the past several weeks — to come forward.
“We are treating this incident as suspicious and have identified a person of interest in relation to this fire,” said Corporal Dana Napier, Kamloops RCMP Spokesperson.
“We will continue to work with KFR to establish the cause of the fire, and if it is related to any other fires in the downtown area which is all part of the ongoing investigation,” added Napier.
Kamloops RCMP and KFR have suspected that one or more individuals has been setting fires downtown, including a string of five different dumpster fires in one evening back in mid-May.
The following month the Mounties also released a grainy photo of someone who may know, or possibly be connected, to a separate fire downtown in early June in the City Hall area.
