This weekend, the Sandman Centre will transform into a powerhouse of competition and community as the Twin Rivers Strengthfest returns for its second year under its current name—and third year overall celebrating strength sports in the city.
Taking place July 12 & 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the festival combines strongman and powerlifting events in a unique dual-arena format that promises high-energy action and awe-inspiring athleticism. Admission is by donation, with proceeds benefiting local charities through the Rotary.
“This is the biggest strongman event in B.C. this year,” said organizer Jake Birkeland. “We’ve got over 150 athletes coming in, with more than 80 strongman competitors alone.”
A Show of Strength—and Community
The event is once again at the Sandman Centre, and organizers say the venue has helped the event grow significantly. Attendees can expect events ranging from log presses and yoke carries to Conan’s wheel and axle bar clean and presses.
“We’ll have big logs being pressed overhead, sandbags being lifted, tires pulled—we’re doing a whole bunch of really cool and entertaining stuff,” said Birkeland.
One of the biggest highlights this year is the inclusion of a U90kg Pro Strongman Show, a Canadian first.
“This is the first time in Canada that the U90 weight class has had the opportunity to compete at a pro level,” said Birkeland. “We’re super excited about that.”
The U90kg division (under 200 pounds) will feature top talent like Tyson Delay, who returns as a newly minted pro, Kyle Evanoff of Grand Prairie, and fan-favorite Jeremy Patfield. Also returning in a new role is Billy Hornaday, last year’s champion, who went on to earn pro status and will now return as a referee.
A Gateway to Bigger Stages
Twin Rivers Strengthfest isn’t just a showcase—it’s also a qualifier for provincials in Williams Lake, which in turn leads to the nationals in Calgary. The event has become a key step on the competitive ladder for Canadian strength athletes.
“It’s awesome to be part of that pathway,” Birkeland said. “This event helps athletes level up and reach the next stage of their journey.”
Vendors, Food, and Open Access
Spectators are encouraged to drop by throughout the weekend. “You don’t have to stay the whole time,” Birkeland noted. “Come check it out, come and go if you want—or stay and watch the whole show.”
Whether you’re a fitness fan, a curious onlooker, or just looking for something exciting to do this weekend, the Twin Rivers Strengthfest offers a unique chance to witness elite strength sport in action—right in the heart of Kamloops.
“It’s going to be a blast no matter what,” said Birkeland. “But the more people in the stands, the more fun it is for everyone.”
