A tragic accident at the Othello Tunnels in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park has prompted a multi-agency recovery effort and the temporary closure of the popular site.
On Saturday, July 26, 2025, at approximately 6:17 p.m., Hope RCMP received a report that a 19-year-old man had fallen into the Coquihalla River near the Othello Tunnels.
Emergency crews quickly responded, including RCMP, Integrated Police Dog Services, Search and Rescue (SAR), the District of Hope Fire Department, and BC Emergency Health Services. During the operation, SAR teams deployed a raft and successfully rescued a bystander who had become stranded while attempting to locate the missing man.
Despite extensive search efforts, including the use of a remotely piloted aircraft system, first responders were unable to locate the man. Authorities believe he is likely trapped beneath the surface due to the river’s powerful current.
The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team was brought in the following day to conduct a site assessment. Given the challenging terrain and swift water conditions, a full recovery operation is being coordinated and will take place at a later date.
As a safety precaution, BC Parks has closed the Othello Tunnels until further notice.
Police have not released the identity of the missing man. The investigation is ongoing.
