Golfers at Sun Peaks Resort should prepare for more laughter than leaderboard glory as the Greenkeeper’s Revenge returns for its second year on Friday, August 22 — and this time, it’s an all-out, full-course affair.
This isn’t your average round of golf.
Dreamed up by longtime Golf Course Superintendent Keith Lyall, the event flips the script on tradition, inviting players to navigate a deliberately mischievous and creatively sabotaged golf course, all in the name of fun. “It’s our chance to get back at the golfers a little bit,” Lyall said with a laugh. “It’s all light-hearted, of course. You might be teeing off from a bunker, putting around a lawn mower, or even swinging from a seated position. But the whole idea is to shift the focus away from the scorecard and toward having a blast.”
Where Chaos Meets the Clubhouse
The Greenkeeper’s Revenge will tee off with a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. on August 22, offering 18 holes of unpredictable antics dreamed up by Lyall and his golf maintenance team. Last year’s debut — a modest 9-hole version — was met with rave reviews and instant demands for more. “We saw a lot of smiles out there,” said Lyall. “One of my favourites from last year — and yes, it might make a return — was ‘Sit it to Hit it’, where you have to drive the ball while seated in a shop chair. It’s hilarious to watch, and harder than it looks!”
Expect unusual tee placements, bizarre pin positions, unexpected course obstructions, and off-the-wall challenges — all designed to delight, frustrate, and surprise even the most seasoned players.
Some reviews from last year’s participants:
- “We had a blast playing the Greenskeeper’s Revenge! Can’t wait to play it next year and see what Keith has up his sleeve!”
- “Just wanted to let you guys know, I had a blast today! It was such a great and fun golf game, especially for a person that isn’t great at golf (don’t tell anyone)!”
- “Just flicking an email saying how much fun the course was today!! Super stoked for next year!!”
Wacky Wardrobes Encouraged
While players must still follow standard golf attire guidelines, the team encourages participants to push the limits with playful, outrageous team outfits and themed uniforms. “It’s about breaking the routine,” said Lyall. “Golf is traditionally a little buttoned-up — this is your chance to shake that off and just have fun with it.”
A Growing Local Favourite
Now a full 18-hole experience, the event is already nearing capacity. “We’re about three-quarters full,” Lyall noted. “So if you’re thinking of signing up, now’s the time. Don’t expect your best score — just bring your best attitude and a good sense of humour.”
Sun Peaks is billing the event as a one-of-a-kind local experience — the only one of its kind in the Kamloops region — and part of a broader effort to build community and offer something truly different in the golf world. “You’re going to hear laughter echoing across the fairways,” Lyall promised. “And maybe a few groans too — but always in good fun.”
