The City of Kamloops is preparing to transition the Overlanders Bridge project into its next phase Friday, August 29, as planned.
According to an update shared on the city’s social media, construction crews will begin work on the southbound lanes of the bridge, marking a milestone in the ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
With the next phase approaching, Civic Construction Manager Wayne Lockhart offered additional insight into what motorists can expect during the transition.
“Essentially, the lanes that were currently closed will be open, and the closure will just be flipped to the other side of the bridge,” said Lockhart. “So northbound will be open, southbound will be closed—with the exception of the southbound off-ramp, that’ll remain open.”
Aside from the change in lane direction, Lockhart noted that day-to-day commuting should feel fairly routine for most drivers.
“It’s pretty much business as usual. All we’re going to see is just driving on the other side of the road,” he said. “Other than that, everything pretty much looks the same.”
One improvement drivers may notice is a smoother experience when traveling northbound.
“The northbound joint rehab, all that work was completed,” Lockhart confirmed. “So the bump we’re all used to feeling at the joints should be eliminated with this recent work.”
The Overlanders Bridge project remains on schedule, with overall completion still targeted for early October.
In the meantime, motorists are advised to stay alert for changes in traffic patterns, especially as crews shift their focus to the southbound lanes.
