Kamloops Fire Rescue responded swiftly to a landscape fire near Guerin Creek in the early hours of Monday morning.
The fire was first reported by witnesses around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Victoria Street West and Mission Flats Road. Several social media posts showed glowing hotspots on the hillside and multiple fire trucks stationed nearby.
Platoon Captain Ken Hartt of Kamloops Fire Rescue shared more details about the incident: “It was a small fire in the ravine that crews stopped before it reached any houses.” While the fire appeared dramatic in the photos taken at night, Captain Hartt reassured that it was limited to brush and did not involve any trees.
Crews brought the fire under control quickly, with the blaze mostly extinguished by just after 3 a.m. Fortunately, no structures were damaged during the fire.
As for the cause of the fire, Josh Cowen – Fire and Life Safety Educator, “it was human caused. That’s definitive. We know that. As far as our report we are leaning to discarded smoking materials.”
