School District 73 and the Kamloops RCMP are continuing to investigate incidents surrounding NorKam Secondary School following Thursday’s lockdown.
The initial alert came around 2:00 p.m. Thursday, when police received a report of a person with a gun at the school, prompting an immediate lockdown at NorKam Secondary and a hold-and-secure at nearby North Shore schools. The lockdown was lifted by 3:20 p.m., and students were safely reunited with their families. No injuries were reported.
Kamloops RCMP say their investigation has so far found no credible evidence of a person with a firearm at the school. However, police are also looking into a threatening social media post that circulated on Snapchat in the hours after the lockdown. RCMP received a report of the post around 6:20 p.m. Thursday. Investigators say the post “threatened students’ safety and has raised concerns in the community” and appears to repeat a similar post previously reported in September.
“The Kamloops RCMP General Investigation Section is handling both incidents,” said Inspector Justin Thiessen, Kamloops RCMP Operations Officer. “We are working closely with the school district to ensure the safety of everyone. Out of an abundance of caution, police will have an increased presence around the school.”
SD73 confirmed that it continues to collaborate with the RCMP and Safer Schools Together. In a statement to Radio NL on Friday, a District spokesperson emphasized the focus remains on the safety and emotional well-being of students, staff, and the NorKam community.
“We understand that these events can be unsettling, and we have arranged additional counselling supports at the school today,” the statement said. “NorKam parents, students, and families can reach out to the school directly if they would like support for their child.”
Police are urging anyone with information regarding either the initial report of a firearm or the social media posts to contact Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file number 2025-37145.
