The City of Kamloops is securing the future of a well-used neighbourhood green space with the purchase of Parkcrest Park in Brocklehurst. The property, located at 2393 Parkcrest Avenue, has been bought from School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) and will officially become City-owned parkland.
Despite not previously being designated as an official City park, Parkcrest Park has long been maintained and booked by the City for organized sports and community recreation. Because of that existing arrangement, officials say the acquisition will have no impact on City operations or budgets.
“Preserving neighbourhood parkland provides lasting benefits for both the community and the environment,” said Sherri Holmes, the City’s Sport, Recreation, and Wellness Manager. “The City will continue to maintain and use this property as a park, providing a space for recreation and for neighbourhood residents.”
The School District supports the move, noting the site no longer meets its educational needs.
“While Parkcrest Park is not required for educational purposes, it is a site that provides community benefit and enjoyment,” said Board Chair Heather Grieve. She added that the district appreciates the City’s longstanding stewardship of the land and looks forward to continued collaboration on shared community priorities.
In late 2024, following public consultation, the Board announced it would seek provincial approval to dispose of the property, citing its limited size and lack of suitability for a future school site.
The $1,980,000 purchase will be funded through the City’s Parkland Reserve, with the acquisition set to be finalized on November 28, 2025.
“Together, the City and School District remain committed to working together to develop spaces that serve the educational needs of local families and strengthen our community,” said Holmes.
