As fall and winter bring longer nights, the Kamloops RCMP is reminding residents that a few nightly habits can go a long way in preventing property crime.
Crime Prevention Liaisons and volunteers have been out across the city handing out tip cards and speaking with the public at Block Watch meetings, community booths, and local events. Their message is simple: make the “9 p.m. Routine” part of your daily schedule.
“We are encouraging people to get into the habit of locking up and turning lights on,” said Sandro Piroddi, Kamloops RCMP Crime Prevention Coordinator. “The 9 p.m. routine is a reminder to secure exterior doors, vehicles and to check your property.”
The routine is built around the idea that most property crimes are crimes of opportunity. A quick nightly checklist can act as an important deterrent.
Suggested 9 p.m. Routine Checklist
Lock Up
- Close and secure all windows and doors, including your garage
- Lock sheds, outbuildings, and gates
- Lock your vehicles
- Set your home alarm, if you have one
Lights On
- Turn on exterior lights
- Leave at least one indoor light on
Exterior Checks
- Remove valuables and garage door openers from your vehicle
- Do a perimeter check of your property
- Secure bikes, tools, and other outdoor valuables
RCMP Crime Prevention Liaisons Raj Dhillon, Sandro Piroddi, Sgt. Safety Bear, and Sandra Labbe have been leading the initiative to spread awareness about these simple but effective safety steps.
