Construction has officially begun on the new modular housing development at 1453 McGill Rd. in Kamloops, a project aimed at providing temporary homes for people experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
The development will offer more than 50 units, including six designed for couples. Residents will have access to shared dining and outdoor spaces, kitchen and laundry facilities, and 24/7 on-site support provided by the Canadian Mental Health Association Kamloops.
“We anticipate opening for clients in early summer 2026,” said a project spokesperson.
Local outreach is already underway. The project team hand-delivered letters to neighbouring businesses, while BC Housing is mailing notices to a broader area, expected to arrive this week.
Drone footage captured today shows crews actively working on site, marking a visible step forward for the city’s efforts to address housing instability.
The development is part of the Province of B.C.’s Belonging in B.C. plan, which seeks to prevent homelessness and rapidly create housing solutions across the province. Since 2017, more than 93,600 homes have been delivered or started, including over 2,200 in Kamloops.

CMHA Kamloops Executive Director Alfred Achoba added, “Housing is the foundation for wellness, and this new site represents a critical step toward building a healthier, more compassionate Kamloops. Together with BC Housing, the city, and our community partners, we are creating not just housing, but a pathway to belonging, recovery, and hope.”
The project has also received support from Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc, recognizing its potential to provide culturally safe housing on traditional Secwépemc territory.
Community members interested in learning more about the development can refer to the original project release or await updates as construction progresses toward the anticipated opening in summer 2026.
