On Thursday, March 5, officers from the Kamloops RCMP Detachment will be taking the plunge at Riverside Park, braving icy waters to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics British Columbia. The event kicks off at 10:00 a.m. and promises excitement for both participants and spectators.
“We always like to come out and support the Special Olympics, whether it’s the baseball in the summer or the Polar Plunge in the winter,” said Corporal Dana Napier, Kamloops RCMP Media Relations Officer. “It’s always good to get out and interact with the community and the great athletes from Special Olympics BC.”
The Polar Plunge is a highlight on the local calendar, drawing participants from the community as well as first responders. “We have a good turnout every year,” said Constable Phil Whiles, lead event organizer. “With a little bit of friendly motivation from our chicken, we are able to motivate emergency responders to either participate in the plunge or donate.”
In addition to the Kamloops RCMP, Kamloops Fire Rescue will be on site to provide water safety oversight for a secure and responsible experience. Brave volunteers will take the plunge into the chilly river waters, then warm up with hot chocolate and enjoy opportunities for photos and community support.
For members of the public, attending the event to cheer on participants does not require registration. However, those wanting to take the plunge themselves are asked to register in advance through the Special Olympics BC Polar Plunge website to ensure proper safety measures and planning. Participants are encouraged to bring warm clothes and blankets for after the plunge.
The Polar Plunge is more than a chilly splash — it’s a chance for the community to come together, support a worthy cause, and celebrate the achievements of Special Olympics athletes.
