Kamloops has it’s first Stanley Cup homegrown hero since 2011.
Logan Stankoven and the Carolina Hurricanes celebrated a six-game victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final – clinching the series with a 3-0 shutout win at T-Mobile Arena on the Vegas strip.
“This is unbelievable… all the support, the family here and everyone back in Kamloops. I can’t wait to bring the Cup back to Kamloops,” said Stankoven post-game on Sportsnet as he celebrated with the Cup.
“My family has given me every opportunity to succeed in life. It’s a dream for sure, I didn’t think it would happen so quick.”
The 23 year-old is finishing up the final year of his NHL Entry Level Contract and will enter his new eight year extension with the Hurricanes next season that will pay him $6M a year through until 2033-34.
The former Kamloops Blazers captain scored a team leading 11 goals in the playoffs. When he scored in a game the Hurricanes were a perfect 10-0 in the post-season.
Stankoven was in consideration for the Conn Smythe Trophy – awarded to the Playoff
MVP. The award went to Hurricanes Captain Jordan Staal. The 37 year-old becomes the oldest winner of the Conn Smythe. Stankoven finished 3rd in the voting done by the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA). Hurricanes veteran Taylor Hall finished 2nd.
Stankoven had plenty of support throughout the playoffs both at home and in-person. Dad Wes, mom Deanna and sister Macie attended all six Stanley Cup Final games. Several other friends and family were on hand for the Cup clinching win in Vegas.
When reached today via text, Wes responded “it was an incredible journey”, as he thanked Kamloops for all the support.
It’s unclear how the Stankovens will celebrate their day with the Stanley Cup. A date and timeline won’t be announced until the coming weeks. It’s tradition that every player and immediate staff member of the winning team spend a day with the Stanley Cup.
Mark Recchi was the last Kamloops native to bring the Cup to Kamloops back in August of 2011 after the Boston Bruins claimed the trophy.
