A rich history of high school football at South Kam Secondary School will be put on hold this year.

According to Head Coach Teagen Norrish, the team was unable to meet the player threshold set forth by BC High School Football.

The team had tried to recruit a few more players this past few weeks, but have fallen short in their efforts.

“It’s too bad. I feel for the kids,” said Norrish when reached for comment by NL Sports Wednesday evening.

Radio NL profiled the need for players for SKSS last week.

At that time the team was confident they would be moving forward with the Varsity program.

A controlled scrimmage against Westsyde had to be called at the half, however, due to a lack of players.

The football team still plans to play in a controlled scrimmage against Okanagan Mission this weekend, but will not move forward into league play in the BC High School AA/AAA Hybrid Conference.

The former powerhouse South Kam Red Devils era in the 1970’s to the 1990’s delivered five BC AAA High School championships — but the last one coming in 1990.

It leaves just Westsyde with a Varsity program this year after Valleyview failed to form a team this fall.
